Chapter 19

Shelly lay awake that night wondering where Matt was and how he was doing. She didn’t get much done that day for worrying about him. Lonnie, Joe, and Frank periodically whispered words of encouragement to her, out of earshot of the others. When any of them were asked where Matt was, the agreed-upon answer was simply that he had something he had to go do.

Shelly had heard no gunshots that day. She didn’t know what kind of rifle Bill might have, but she knew what Matt had, and what sound it made. She assumed that Bill had a high-powered rifle of some sort, judging from what the note had said about them never seeing it coming. He’s going to bushwhack them, she thought, remembering the old term for murdering from ambush.

Lonnie lay in bed wondering how long it was going to take for Matt to find and kill Amy’s uncle. He would sure like to wrap his big hands around Bill’s throat and squeeze the life out of him. Marge turned in her sleep and stretched her arm across his chest. Lonnie put his big hand over hers and tried to go to sleep.

Frank was fast asleep, having faith that Matt was going to be the victor in this manhunt. He had no trouble going to sleep because he trusted Matt’s abilities and instincts.

Joe was staring at the ceiling and thinking that he should have been the one to track Bill down and kill him. He was the better tracker and could move more quietly through the woods. But he also knew that this was something that Matt had to do himself. Plus, Matt was the leader of their little commune, and his decision was final. There had been no changing his mind. Joe wished that Matt would have at least let him go along. Emma woke to find Joe still awake.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“Can’t sleep right now,” Joe replied.

“Do you need a sleepy shot?” she asked, referring to their medicinal whiskey.

“No, I’ll be okay. But thank you.”

Emma scooted closer and snuggled down into the hollow of his arm and went back to sleep. Joe lay there for another half hour before drifting off.

Everybody else in the house was oblivious to the manhunt going on outside that day, and therefore had nothing to keep them awake that night.
